| Eastern Connecticut State University, founded in 1889 and located in Willimantic, is the state's public liberal arts university. The University emphasizes undergraduate studies, with students taking advantage of a strong liberal art core curriculum, interdisciplinary coursework, and a host of out-of-class field experiences to develop a broad, integrated perspective. Eastern's liberal arts focus encourages the development of academic inquiry, critical thinking, and research among all its students. Small classes and a low student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1 allow students to get the individual attention they need.
An active Honors Program, Study Abroad opportunities, and a comprehensive internship program help ensure the rigor of Eastern's academic offerings. In addition, an array of guest lecturers and performers add a rich cultural and scholarly to campus life. Students also grow in knowledge as they work side-by-side with faculty in Eastern's on-campus greenhouse, planetarium, television and radio stations, art gallery, and theatre. Eastern is home to the Wickware Planetarium, a state and regional resource for people of all ages.
The University offers 33 majors ranging from accounting to visual arts, along with 49 minors. Full-time faculty members teach 72 percent of the classes, with 93 percent of the faculty having a terminal degree.
The university's 178-acre campus combines the beauty of open space with the charm of classic buildings and the efficiency of modern classrooms fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
New facilities under construction include an expanded Student Center and a modern, 173,000- square-foot Science Building.
Approximately 70 percent of the 3,850 full-time undergraduates enrolled in fall 2006 live on campus, where housing options include traditional two-and four-person rooms and four-and six-person air-conditioned apartment suites. Freshmen are particularly encouraged to take advantage of Eastern's residential community, and 90 percent of the entering class in fall 2006 is living on campus. Direct connection to the campus computing network is available from all residence hall rooms. Eastern strives to create a global community; it is proud to draw students from more than 30 states across the country and from 32 countries. These students enrich campus life and enliven the intellectual environment.
